Description of the company and its technology

Airex Energy is a technology provider of biomass torrefaction systems. Based in Quebec, Canada, Airex has developed a patented technology called CarbonFXTM for the conversion of biomass into biocoal, a clean and renewable alternative to coal. Airex is also developing value-added carbonized products like biochar for soil amendment, activated carbon for gases purification and torrefied wood flour for biocomposites. Airex has started operation of a full commercial plant in November 2015, with a production capacity of 15,000 tons/year.

Sylvain Bertrand has over 20 years experience in corporate finance, business development and engineering. Prior to joining Airex, Sylvain was Senior Advisor, Energy Development and Strategy for Resolute Forest Products where he was responsible for exploring new bioenergy initiatives. From 2000 to 2007, Sylvain was Principal at Multiple Capital and Innovatech du Grand Montreal, where he managed a portfolio of venture capital investments.

Sylvain is currently serving on the board of CRIBIQ (Consortium de recherche et innovations en bioprocédés au Québec) and on IBTC (International Biomass Torrefaction Council) steering committee.

Sylvain is a mechanical engineer who attended École Polytechnique de Montréal. He holds a Master degree in Energy Engineering from the Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse (ENSEEIHT) and a MBA from HEC Montreal, where he received the Fondation Jeannine Guillevin Wood-Copel Scholarship of Excellence.
